Drug and Alcohol Testing in the Workplace: What Employers Need to Know

A practical guide to workplace drug and alcohol testing in Australia, the testing methods, when to test, legal considerations, and how to run a defensible program.

Why drug and alcohol testing matters

Fitness for work is not just physical. A worker affected by drugs or alcohol is a safety risk to themselves and everyone around them, particularly in safety-critical industries like mining, construction, transport and rail. A clear, well-run testing program protects your people, your business and your duty of care.

The testing methods

Australian workplaces generally use two sample types, both with recognised standards:

  • Urine testing, detects historical use over the past few days. Conducted to AS/NZS 4308, it remains the most common method for pre-employment and periodic testing.
  • Oral fluid testing, detects more recent use, typically within the last few hours. Conducted to AS/NZS 4760, it is increasingly used for random and post-incident testing because it better reflects current impairment rather than weekend use.
  • Breath alcohol, measures current blood alcohol concentration instantly and is standard for random, post-incident and pre-shift testing.

When to test

A defensible program usually combines several testing occasions:

  • Pre-employment, as part of the pre-employment medical, establishing a baseline.
  • Random, unannounced testing that deters use across the workforce.
  • Post-incident, after any notifiable incident or near miss.
  • Reasonable suspicion, where a supervisor observes signs of possible impairment.
  • Return to duty / follow-up, after a positive result or rehabilitation.

Legal and fairness considerations

Testing must be applied consistently and fairly. A documented drug and alcohol policy, informed consent, chain-of-custody procedures, and confirmatory laboratory testing of non-negative results are all essential. Workers should understand the policy before being tested, and results must be handled with strict privacy.

It is also important to remember that a non-negative result is not by itself proof of impairment, particularly with urine testing, which can detect substances long after any effect has worn off. This is why many safety-critical workplaces are moving toward oral fluid for random and post-incident testing, as it better reflects current fitness for work.

On-site and mobile testing

For larger sites, shift changes and remote workforces, bringing testing to the worker is far more efficient than sending workers to a clinic. Work Plus Health offers on-site and mobile drug and alcohol testing alongside pre-employment and health surveillance programs, so testing fits around your operations rather than disrupting them.

A defensible, proportionate program

The best testing programs are proportionate to the risk, clearly documented, and consistently applied. Whether you need a one-off pre-employment screen or an ongoing random program across multiple sites, Work Plus Health can help design and deliver testing that stands up to scrutiny, keeping your workplace safe and your business protected.
